Keeping your baby warm in winterNew moms know that babies require a little extra care when it comes to protection from the elements. A cool breeze that feels refreshing on a hot day can blow right through baby’s skin—creating a chill factor we kind of forget about.

So, with that in mind, as winter draws ever more near—you’ll need to keep your little one bundled with a few cozy pieces of gear. Here are our suggestions as to what should be on your list before temps drop even further.

Car Seat Cover

For parents in cold climates a car seat cover might be a worthwhile investment. It’s like a snug little sleeping bag that slips over the top of the car seat, keeping babies warm without the need for wearing a winter coat. The reason you might choose the seat cover as opposed to a coat is—many winter coats put too much fabric and fluff between your child and the safety harness. This renders the seat unfit to be effective in the event of a car accident.

A New Winter Coat

An obvious choice, but one rife with considerations. A water and wind-resistant parka is an essential for any winter baby’s wardrobe. Make sure the coat is lined with fleece and machine washable. You might also want to check whether the coat may be used in a car seat.

Layers

In addition to a decent coat, it’s a good idea to add a few extra layers into the mix as temperatures begin to drop. Long sleeves, little sweaters, cozy socks, and blankets should be in heavy rotation—especially in the car.

Layers allow you to remove and pack on layers with changing temperatures—going from too hot stores and heat-blasted homes to the frigid outside air. According to What to Expect, a good baseline is dressing your baby in the same amount of layers you’re wearing yourself.

And, if you don’t have a car seat-friendly winter coat on hand, your best bet is to take it off and bundle up your little cutie in a blanket for the ride.

Footmuffs

What is a footmuff, you ask? Well, silly name aside this thing is actually pure genius. An add on to your stroller or car seat, this awesome piece essentially turns your baby’s ride into a sleeping bag on wheels. It’s perfect if you live in a cold climate and do a lot of walking outside—in milder climates, your baby might get overheated.

Finally, dressing for winter doesn’t need to be hard, trust your instincts and do a little research. Looking into what other people say in reviews can certainly make a big difference—just don’t fret too much about which coat to buy.

Beyond looking for the right products, you’ll probably want to document this time in your baby’s life by printing some photos of your bundled up bundle of joy.

There are many unique photo printing ideas you can borrow, which would serve as a sweet memory in the future.
